At a recent press conference in London, Capcom announced that Street Fighter, the game that started it all (for some people) will be getting a numerical sequel. While spin offs in the series are plentiful and vary in quality, the editions that have bore a new number on the end of the name have always been revolutions in the genre.
Street Fighter 2 was originally released in 1991 and five separate editions (including the soon to be released ‘HD’ edition) of the game have born its title. Considered one of the most influential and best selling games of all time, Street Fighter 2 spawned two separate movies and several anime television series. Street Fighter 3 was released in arcades in 1997 and had three separate editions released for home consoles.
History has shown that each successive Street Fighter title has bested the previous one so naturally the buzz created by the announcement of Street Fighter IV is electrifying. Will the game stand up to its predecessors- Well, according to Capcom we will have to wait about a year or so to find out. At least it will give people a reason to go back to the arcades again.
