3D’s Rezo speaks with Scot Project, in town soon for Transmission’s superstar DJ battle.

Frank Zenker, AKA Scot Project, is one of those ‘been there, done that’ dudes. He is regarded by many as a sensation in the European hard trance scene, has toured the world extensively and has remixed for some of the biggest names in trance music. “My brother introduced me to electronic music when I was younger,” Zenker begins. “He allowed me to practice on his turntables. I taught myself to beat match and mix.”

He freely admits to liking all kinds of electronic music, from house to electro, from trance to techno. Trance has clearly experienced a huge resurgence in recent times, with numerous artists from almost every electronic genres crossing over; trance DJs are playing techno and electro; house DJs playing beats and bobs. In the midst of all this, trance is still Zenker’s first love.

“I really like the melodies and harmonies combined with the harder beats,” he explains. “It’s very emotional, which is why I guess so many people enjoy it so much. I like to change my music style sometimes. You have to in order to stay fresh. Sometimes in my longer sets I play different styles as well.”

Zenker has been a busy man on the production front. After a brief production hiatus, he is back with a new release. “I have just released my first Scot Project track in over three years on my own label, Druck Records,” he notes. “There are a lot of big DJs playing it, which is good. I have done a lot of remixes in my Promotional Use Only series – so you can see I have been very busy.

“My second album A2 is in progress but I hope to have it ready by the end of this year. I don’t want to release an album with which I am not 100 per cent satisfied, so that’s why I am taking my time. It will be a mixture of my new hard-edge trance sound and some other tracks that people are hoping to hear.”

Not surprisingly Zenker won’t admit to having any favourites. “Of course everyone has their favourite tracks that they play,” he admits. “But there is so much music out there, so many talented producers. I am playing my new release S2, as well as my own edits and productions.”

With all the success he has experienced over the years, Zenker still considers himself lucky to be an old school representative of the trance resurgence. “I think it’s great and I am very happy that people like my music,” he exclaims. “I get a good reaction from the crowd. It is a very humbling experience. I enjoy what I do – being a DJ and making music.

“I love coming to Australia, I look forward to it every year on my calendar; it also gives me a little bit of time to have a little holiday while I am there. I am always happy to play with Yoji as we have been friends for a long time. You can expect a lot of new tunes and some of my own special edits that I like to do exclusively for my sets. You will hear a lot of music that you will not hear anywhere else and, of course, some of my own productions. I just want the people to enjoy themselves and have a good time.”
